Types of DSC
Class I: These certificates shall be issued for both business personnel and private individuals use. These certificates will confirm that the information in the application provided by the subscriber does not conflict with the information in well-recognized consumer databases. It is not generally advised to buy class I DSC as it has very less uses and comparatively less assured
Class II: Once upon a time it was considered as the most popular type of DSC. But with effect from 1st January 2021, DSC of class II has been discontinued. However, the existing DSC will remain active till 2 years from the date of issuance.
Class III: The only DSC that can be issued from now onwards will be class III Type. The most assured and promising type of DSC is class III. It is pertinent to note that all these DSC can be issued with encryption or signature only or both encryption and signature. DSC with both the features is considered as "Combo".
Sign only DSC can be used for GST filings, ITR filings, ROC filings, IEC applications, Auditing, Doc Signer, ICEGATE, CERSAI, Patents and Trademarks.
Encrypted DSC are required at e-bidding, e-tendering, e-procurements
DGFT DSC are special category DSC which are required at import-export trading or all licensing requirements in DGFT(Directorate General of Foreign Trade)
Overview
Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) are the electronic format of paper certificate like a driving License, passport etc. Certificates serve as proof of identity of an individual for a certain purpose; for example, a Passport identifies someone as a citizen of that country; Likewise, a Digital Signature Certificate can be presented electronically to prove your identity, to access information or services on the Internet or to sign certain documents digitally.
