Return means statement. Income tax return means Statement of Income Tax. It is a document in which a person declares all his income earned throughout the year along with investments made.
ITR return forms are attachment less forms and, hence, the taxpayer is not required to attach any document (like proof of investment, TDS certificates, etc.)
